Milenkevich and Battipaglia win Commodore Hull Road Race

Perfect weather helped bring out a record field of 625 finishers for the 2012 Commodore Hull Thanksgiving Day 5K Road Race that took place in Derby and Shelton on Thanksgiving morning.

Tim Milenkevich of Ansonia and Bobby Giuliani of Shelton broke from a pack of four runners that included Robert Yamnicky and Tom Saksa to stage a two-man duel for first place, said Jack Walsh, Commodore Hull race committee co-chairman.

Milenkevich ran in fourth place in the early going with Yamnicky holding the lead until the pack crossed over the Derby-Shelton Bridge. At that point Giuliani took over the lead. By the time they reached Main Street in Derby, Giuliani had about a 20-yard lead over Milenkevich. As they reached the historic Derby Green, Milenkevich took his first lead of the day, Walsh said.

“They were virtually neck and neck until they got back on the Derby-Shelton Bridge, when Tim opened a slight lead,” he said. As they turned onto Howe Avenue, Milenkevich’s lead was about 10 yards, and he continued to increase the lead to the final gap of 12 seconds to finish in 15:56.

Giuliani finished at 16:06. Saksa and Yamnicky maintained their spots in the top five with times of 16:54 and 17:04 respectively. Bart Wasiolek almost caught Yamnicky at the end as he finished in 17:05.

Winning for the sixth straight year, Kim Battipaglia of New Haven dominated the Women’s Division, Walsh said. Her winning time of 19:45 put her well ahead of Kelsey Grimmer’s second-place time of 20:26.

Lauren Flament was third in 21:38. Cassandra Gucwa’s 21:46 and Molly Duffy’s 21:57 rounded out the top five.

Net proceeds from the race will be given to the Boys & Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley. In the 11 years that the race has been held, the Race Committee has raised more than $100,000 for the club, Walsh said.
