The Spooner House annual frozen turkey and fixings drive is on now through Nov. 18 and the need for community help is greater than ever, according to Susan Agamy, the executive director.
“More than 6,000 individuals have been served by the Food Bank this past year, comprising over 153,000 meals, 92,000 more than just four years ago, when 61,000 meals were served,” Agamy said. “Our supplies have virtually disappeared this week because of recent requests for local aid following the visit to Connecticut by storm Sandy.”
Plenty of locations throughout the Valley will be drop-off sites for donations. In Shelton, Huntington Fire Co. headquarters, at 44 Church Street is collecting nonperishables on Sunday, Nov. 11 and Nov. 18, from 8:30 to noon. R.D. Scinto Corporate Park, at 1 Corporate Drive, will be collecting frozen turkeys and fixings on Thursday, Nov. 15, in the parking lot of the Scinto Towers.
Smile Dental Center’s owner, Dr. Bruce Sofferman, along with his wife, Deborah, and their daughter, Sophia, will be dressed up in Thanksgiving costumes and joined by a turkey mascot as they attempt to flag down drivers to drop off turkeys and fixings from 7 to 10 a.m. on Wednesday Nov. 14, at 318 Oxford Road (Route 67) and again on Thursday Nov. 15, from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the R.D. Scinto Corporate Park.
Sofferman’s Smile Dental Centers at 318 Oxford Road in Oxford and 61 Elizabeth Street in Derby will also be collecting frozen turkeys and fixings Nov. 12 through Nov. 16, during regular business hours Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Some of the items needed include boxes of instant potatoes, packages of gravy, cans of vegetables, stuffing, pie crust mix, pie filling, evaporated milk, coffee, tea, powdered juice mix, canned fruit, napkins, sugar, brownie mix, and cornbread mix.
