Rev. Msgr. Thomas James Whalen

Rev. Msgr. Thomas James Whalen, age 70, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012 at Bridgeport Hospital. He was the beloved pastor of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque Parish, Shelton.

Rev. Msgr. Whalen was born in Hartford on October 28, 1941 to the late Thomas and Mary (Claffey) Whalen. He was raised in Hartford and was a longtime resident of Shelton and Black Point Beach Section of Niantic.

Rev. Msgr. Whalen was ordained on May 20, 1967 and served the Diocese of Bridgeport as a priest at Our Lady of the Assumption Parish in Fairfield. He then became the Chaplain at Bridgeport Hospital which he held for 10 years. He was also assigned to St. Ambrose Church in Bridgeport, becoming Pastor of that Church and also being awarded the appointment Monsignor. Rev. Msgr. Whalen final assignment was Pastor to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque Parish which he currently held. He was an avid golf player, enjoyed going to the beach, a good steak and lobster.

Rev. Msgr. Whalen is survived by 1 nephew, 2 nieces, and several cousins.

He was predeceased by his brother, John Whalen.

The family wished to express their gratitude to Fr. Robert Crofut, Fr. Nello Barachini, Fr. John Stronkowski, Dr. Richard Link and Dr. S.M. Yousuf Ali, for the friendship and dedication they showed to Rev. Msgr Whalen.

Friends may greet the family on Sunday, Nov. 4, from 2 – 5 p.m.in <http://p.m.in> the St. Margaret Mary Alacoque Parish, 380 Long Hill Ave., Shelton. Following calling hours, a Parish Mass will take place on Sunday at 5:15 p.m. On Monday, a Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. in St. Margaret Mary Church, Shelton. His burial will be private at Mt. St. Benedict’s Cemetery, Bloomfield.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Daisy’s Eye Cancer Fund c/o Trisha Hewitt, treasurer, 1118 County Route 12, Pennellville, NY 13132.

The Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Rd., Shelton has been entrusted with his services.
