Shelton resident still in critical condition after National Guard truck accident

The Connecticut Army National Guard member from Shelton injured in yesterday’s vehicle accident on Interstate 95 in New York state remains in critical condition, according to Capt. Dawn Surprenant, the unit’s public affairs officer.

Surprenant said Friday afternoon that Sgt. 1st class Kayla Anne Downey, 31, of Shelton was taken to the hospital after being “seriously injured” in the accident.

The National Guard has declined to release the name of the hospital where Downey is being treated to protect the privacy of her family, Surprenant said.

Downey was one of two occupants of a military vehicle that collided with a civilian car on I-95 near the border of Port Chester and Rye, N.Y.

Another National Guard member, Staff Sgt. Ronald Patterson Jr. of Bridgeport, was killed in the accident. They were in a Light Medium Tactical Vehicle that was transporting used ammunition from Connecticut to Fort Dix, N.J.

More information on the accident is expected to be released later this afternoon.

It is hoped that the National Guard member from Connecticut makes a full recovery and can return to duty.
