The Shelton Orange eighth-grade team improved its record to 6-0 with a 33-0 victory over the Oxford Wolverines on Sunday at Finn Stadium.
Offensively, the Hawks were led by JJ Lever— who notched his first touchdown of the year from a Tim Schiffer halfback pass, Joe Zoppi who scored on a five-yard slant pass from David Wells, and David Berritto, who scored on a 45-yard punt return.
Matt Keklick, Lever and Schiffer also contributed with extra points. Defensively, the ’Hawks were led by Keklick — who picked up a Oxford fumble and returned it 25 yards into the end zone, and Berritto, who recovered a fumble in the end zone from his cornerback slot.
Dan Barone, Porter McKinnon, Robert Valeri, Lever, Matt Liscio, Jake Camerino and Jon Sobotka combined for 19 tackles, as the Seahawk defense held Oxford to one first down overall.
Joe Zoppi chipped in with two interceptions and Joe Ciliberti, Nate Miller and Tre Genova also contributed with fumble recoveries.
The seventh-grade Shelton Seahawks were defeated 42-26 by the Danbury Hatters.
The Seahawks jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, when Matt Rice threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to fullback Matt Bean.
With Shelton trailing 22-6, Tyler Nolan recovered a fumbled punt at the Hatter 40-yard line.
Shelton then marched 40 yards in 11 plays to score, as Rice plunged in from one yard out to cut the deficit to 22-12.
In the fourth quarter, Rice found Connor Murphy on a 52-yard scoring strike to pull Shelton within 29-20.
With two minutes left in the game, Robert Wood, who led the team in rushing with 94 yards, bulled his way for a highlight-reel 19-yard touchdown to cut the Danbury lead to 36-26.
The Seahawk defense was led by the tackling of Wood, Michael Lombard, Jerry Sorensen, Eddie Radzion, Nathan Oakes and Ryan Rodko.
