It’s still uncertain if Lauretti qualifies for lieutenant governor’s primary

While Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton has dropped out of the Republican race for governor, it’s still uncertain if Shelton Mayor Mark Lauretti has qualified to run for lieutenant governor in the GOP primary on Aug. 12.

“We are still counting — don’t have a final tally yet,” Av Harris, spokesman for the Connecticut Secretary of the State’s office, said on late Wednesday afternoon about Lauretti’s submitted petition signatures.

Harris said the status of Lauretti’s candidacy should be known by the end of this week.

Lauretti needed to hand in 8,190 signatures from registered Republicans in the state by June 10 to qualify for the lieutenant governor’s primary.

Had teamed up with Boughton

Lauretti had teamed up with Boughton’s campaign to try to collect the petition signatures, and they have said about 9,000 signatures were handed in.

Those signatures now are being verified by local election officials across the state. A certain percentage of petition signatures are routinely found to be invalid for various reasons, such as the signers not being registered voters or not being registered in the appropriate political party.

Boughton has been quoted in some press reports Wednesday as saying he expects Lauretti to fall short of the needed signatures.

Lauretti could run on his own

While Lauretti and Boughton were planning to run as a team, Lauretti still can run for lieutenant governor on his own in the primary if he should qualify and chooses to do so.

There now are three candidates running in the Republican primary for lieutenant governor — state Rep. Penny Bacchiochi of Stafford Springs, who has the party endorsement; former Groton Mayor Heather Somers, and former U.S. Comptroller David Walker of Bridgeport.
