Three new hires will be joining the Shelton Police Department soon, as new officers.Lt. Robert Kozlowsky announced hiring Kevin Corda, Richard Bailey and David Wirkus as new members of the department. They started training at the state Police Academy July 13. Academy training includes more than 800 hours of curriculum training on everything from practical skills like handcuffing, human relations, criminal investigation and patrol procedures. The new hires must also pass fitness examinations that include push-ups, sit-ups and running.
Once they start, officers will have a mandated number of field training hours.
The Shelton Police Department began accepting applications for new officers in February. At the time the department had just over 50 members but was budgeted for more than 60.
According to the Shelton application, the salary for a police officer is $52,540 a year, plus benefits. Applicants have to be at least 21 years old. A bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or a related field is preferred but not required.
The department is currently preparing to hire additional officers, Lt. Kozlowsky said.
