Americans battle back against Ansonia, eliminated by Union City

Trailing 5-1 after three innings, the Shelton American Little League 11-12 year old All-Stars came back in thrilling fashion to beat Ansonia, 6-5.

Shelton American’s fight-back from 5-1 down ended with a walk-off single by Matt Hunyadi that drove in P.J. DeJesus for the winning run.

Ansonia jumped out to an early 2-0 lead aided by a couple first-inning errors by Shelton American.

Leading off the second inning for Shelton American, Marcus Melendez cut the lead in half with a solo blast well over the left-field fence at the Prospect Little League complex.

Ansonia quickly answered in the top of the third inning with a three-run home run from Bryson Carfaro to take a 5-1 lead.

As it turned out, that would be the last hit of the day for Ansonia, as Shelton American starting pitcher Tommy Lewis would retire eight of the next 10 batters. Shelton American showed great resilience over the final three innings.

Facing possible elimination, Connor Murphy jacked a three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring Robert Wood and David Ferris to get Shelton within a run.

Lewis pitched a stellar 5 1/3 innings for Shelton American, striking out seven Ansonia batters before reaching the pitch-count maximum.

Shelton American reliever Sean Walsh did a great job retiring the last two Ansonia batters in the top of the sixth inning. In addition to big hits by Hunyadi, Murphy and Melendez, the Shelton American offense included hits by David Ferris (2-for-2, double), Brendan Finch (2-for-3) and Lewis (double).
