A Shelton insurance agency recently was recognized for reaching its 60th anniversary by the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce.

The Wilson Agency, based in Huntington Center, offers property and casualty insurance for both personal and commercial customers. The independent insurance agency represents multiple insurance companies.

The firm was founded in Bridgeport by Charlie Wilson Sr. who later decided to relocate the agency to Shelton. Wilson Sr., now deceased, was an original member of the Huntington Business Association and supported many local charities.

“As the city has grown in size, so has the business by establishing strong community ties, business relationships, and earning recognition within the insurance industry,” said chamber President Bill Purcell.

Other family members join firm

Son Charlie Wilson Jr. joined the agency in 1979 and son Tom Wilson began working there in 1989. Both have been involved in the Shelton community.

Charlie Jr. was Shelton Exchange Club president and serves on the Inland Wetlands Commission. Tom has been a youth sports coach and was one of the founders of the Commodore Hull Thanksgiving Day 5k Road Race.

Charlie Jr. is a past president of the Connecticut Independent Insurance Agents, and Tom now is chairman of the same group.

A third-generation family member, Charlie Jr.’s son James, joined the firm in 2008.

“Legacy of community service”

Purcell said as the company marks 60 years in business, Wilson Sr. “would be proud to know that his firm has reached this important milestone and that his legacy of community service continues through his sons and now his grandson.”

The Wilson Agency was one of a few businesses recognized during the local chamber’s Holiday Breakfast Club and Awards Celebration.
