Amanda Jacob

A 2008 Shelton High School graduate will raise money for a memorial fund established for one of the Newtown student victims by running in the Boston Marathon.

Amanda Jacob now lives in Charlotte, N.C., but grew up in Shelton and attended Shelton public schools.

Jacob is dedicating her training and participation in the upcoming marathon to Chase Kowalski, a 7-year-old boy killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting on Dec. 14. The money she raises will go to the Chase Kowalski Memorial Fund.

Cheerleading to gymnastics

Jacob, a clinical dietitian, competed in cheerleading and gymnastics for most of her life. Four years ago, she found a new passion in running. She has completed several half marathons and two full marathons.

Last year, she qualified for the Boston Marathon and plans to run it this year. The 2013 Boston Marathon will take place Monday, April 15.

She is the daughter of David and Valerie Jacob and her step-mother is Melissa Jacob. Amanda has two siblings — sister Katie and brother Nate. All live in Shelton.

Chase loved to run

Chase Kowalski loved to run.

The Chase Kowalski Memorial Fund was set up by the family of Chase Kowalski to honor his memory. Chase loved to run, according to his family. Their wish is to remember Chase’s vitality and spirit, and that of all of the victims.

Chase’s mom said her son first got “the running bug” at age 2.  “He always found joy while running, and through running his character grew stronger,” she said.

The Chase Kowalski Memorial Fund’s goal is to inspire change in American communities to ensure children are safely protected from something like this ever happening again. The fund supports initiatives focused on children, family, healing and school safety.

How to help Amanda and the fund

All donations made in recognition of Amanda Jacob’s Boston Marathon run (minus FirstGiving fees) will go to help Sandy Hook Elementary School families — both victims and survivors — affected by the tragedy.

Jacob is asking people to donate $1 a mile to her effort. A full marathon is 26.2 miles. “Show Chase’s family and Newtown that we care,” she said.
